13-In the Library

[Martel is in the library today, reading history books from Aselia. She has a few that still need to be put back, but she can't find the history section again. It's possible the Castle moves things around. It wouldn't really surprise her at all. She puts it down when she gets to a particularly upsetting passage about the Chosen Ones and pulls over her journal. The talk about Chosen Ones reminded her of a promise she made. And someone she has to check on.]

Are you free on Sunday? We could do your flying lessons then, since I'm also free.

Oh, and you should be careful who you prank.

[Once-Ler]
Are you all right up there in your tower? I haven't heard any of your silly songs over the journal lately. Or do I have to go up there again? [And break down the door and ruin all your traps.]

[With that done, Martel goes back to skimming the history books. Feel free to approach and distract, she could really use it.]

To wake the Goddess, of course. Of course the goddess was actually not a goddess at all. She was just dead.

I fail to understand the reasoning behind this. What good would these journeys do, then, if they could not, in fact, wake this woman? Surely, the crafter of these tales knew that she was no goddess.

He did. Because the goddess was dead, but he had her soul. The girls each had a Cruxis Crystal, and each place they stopped, at each pilgrimage they made, the crystal would take a bit more of them until they were soulless shells, and the goddess could be put inside of the girl.

[Oh. That's... Well, "monstrous" is the first word that comes to mind, but she'll refrain from saying that.]

I see. [And that's all she'll say for now, choosing to listen rather than speak.]

None of the girls knew this, of course. They all thought they were saving their world. But all the things they were saving their world from were carefully constructed by the man who wanted the goddess resurrected. Cruxis Crystals grow better when the wearer is upset or had negative emotions.

[...Alright. She'll say it now.] Clever. Monstrous, but clever.

Yes...yes it was. [So very clever and terrible all at once.] The man...he had a sword that could bend reality. He divided the world into the two countries of the great war, separating them from each other by space and dimensions. Since there was only enough mana from the seed of the Giant Tree to support one world at a time. And he wouldn't let it grow since he had tied the Goddess' soul to it. If it grew...she would be absorbed and lost.

So the girls made the pilgrimage to switch the mana flow. One world was always declining and suffering while the other world was flourishing.

And how does the tale end?

A group found out the truth, and killed the man and took his sword. They reunited the worlds and let the seed grow. The woman who wasn't a goddess then became the guardian spirit of the new tree.

[She drops her voice to a more gentle tone.] A fair ending, I think. As best as may have been expected.

Of course. The world still needs to recover, but it's a happier ending than anyone expected.

May I ask your part in the tale? [She has her guesses, but she'd rather have Martel tell her herself.]

...I was the goddess. My brother... he went insane after I was murdered.

I thought as much. I know I need not tell you that you bear no responsibility for his sins. [But she did anyway. Because even if you know it, you may still need to hear it.]

In my name thousands of people died. Innocent girls, and all those that were victims of the Desians and Cruxis.

In your name, yet not by your hand.

I still feel some responsibility. I raised Mithos, and he did all of this. He couldn't let go of his hate.

[She shakes her head.] He was a grown man, was he not? There comes a time when we all must take responsibility for our own actions.

He was 14 when I died. [Yes, the 14 year old who thought he sister was the most wonderful person in the world had the magical reality bending sword.]

And when he set his plan in motion? [Because if he planned all that at 14, your brother was a flipping genius.]

The thing is...I don't know. The last thing I remember is dying. I'm working on what I've been told and I what I've looked up in books.

Knowing what is to come may be a hardship. [She knows.]

Yes. But I just have to trust that the world is going to be well taken care of.

[A small smile.] From what I have seen of those of your world who have found there way here, I do not doubt it.

[She smiles back.] I know. They truly are the ones who will make a difference.
