98.3 - turn it on

[hard_talker]

[tonight's broadcast comes a little early, for the sake of the curious who like their sleep. Mark turns on his record player, and the broadcast picks up the scratch of the needle for a brief moment before Leonard Cohen's voice drifts over the airwaves. After a moment, he turns it down, but not completely off, and speaks over the music:]

So, not much goin' on in the halls of Castle Wonderfuck this week, besides the usual bullshit. The Host Club did their thing down in the ballroom, though yours truly didn't go. There's a poll up on page [this one] of the journal ... if you're bored and have a second, go check it out. We've only got one new guy, this week ... someone named Treebeard. I'll take bets on whether his parents were hippies or not, how 'bout you?

The real news tonight is a little on the self-promoting side. Yours truly, being of completely rational modesty, is holding an open broadcast forum down here in the ballroom! The accoustics are great, so if you're wonderin' how to work that brand-new shiny radio of yours, come on down and I'll show you the basics! And for those of you who know a little bit already, I've hauled down some of the more high-tech stuff you can add on to make things even more fun. So come down and spin some platters with me! Bring your favorite tunes and we'll get this castle up off its collective ass and rockin' out!

[and with that, he'll switch over from vinyl to CDs, and play this little number while he waits for people to show]

From the spellbook of the great and hallowed temple of Radio Shack. [he grins] "AV in", this here? It means "AudioVisual in". It carries the sound into this part from whatever machine I plug the other end into. ... If I plug it into a TV it'll carry pictures in, too.

That makes sense. [He fiddles with the wire a bit] Though I can't imagine you can get much use of of that part with radio.

[hard_talker]

Yeah, no ... but AV cables are pretty easy to deal with, so I just use 'em instead of tryin' to get plain old audio cable. There're so many fuckin' variables with this stuff that sometimes it's easier to stick with the basics.

... There anything in magic that works like that?

[lord_wizard]

That's probably a decent summation of all magic in general, really. It's all variables based upon something very basic.

[hard_talker]

Is it weird that the more I learn from you and Hermione about magic, the more it just sounds like another funky kinda technology?

[lord_wizard]

[The wizard grinned and shook his head]

No, not at all. There may be a place for science in magic, and vice versa. The more I learn about it, the more I think the same. James in particular has been keen on getting to me understand things like genetics. Who is to say what gives us the power that we have? To channel magic like metal channels electricity?

[hard_talker]

Yeah, seriously. I wonder if that isn't genetic in some way - that'd explain why some people can use magic and some can't, even when we're all here. ... And I didn't know you knew James, too.

[lord_wizard]

Oh, I'd be willing to wager it is. Numerous people I've spoken to mention the talent being passed down, and I've seen evidence of the same in my own world.

[Felix smirked] What, you don't think I can be as much the social butterfly as you? We've talked several times, often about our specialties.
