[It had been hard enough trying to meditate with everything that had been going on in the past month or so... and then the journal constantly flipping open to the sounds of children and exasperated parents. Now that the children were gone Flynn decided to give it another shot.

Then his hand started twitching.

So he clasped his hands together, took a deep breath and relaxed...

and his cheek started twitching.

Oh you have GOT to be kidding. He opens his eyes, looking out the window at the trees and sighing.]

That's just a low blow, man.

[Glancing over, he sees his journal open on the nearby dresser. Shaking his head he dictates]

The idea behind losing something isn't a new one. It teaches us to be less reliant on certain objects or abilities. To reach beyond and find deeper strength within ourselves to compensate. But I have to wonder about the reasoning behind the things this place chooses to take from us.

[He chuckles] By doing nothing you allow your mind to drift to ideas and possibilities you wouldn't have thought of otherwise. A relaxed mind is a mind more prone to creativity and philosophy.

How can you be productive if you're wasting that much time, though?

[no, really, from a programmer's standpoint, idle time makes no sense.]

Many things can be considered a waste of time, depending on how you look at them. In this case, even if you're not actively doing anything your mind is still working. Think of it like... background programs at work while the core machine is in sleep mode. Sometimes you have to look deep within yourself to find the answer, something you can't do while you're busy working.

I didn't realize imagination was a background program... How does it run?

I was speaking more metaphorically. That's how it works with humans. Let's try something, though.

[He thinks for a moment] Close your eyes. Now I want you to picture a building. Not a building on the Grid, or one of the ones here. A building you've never actually seen before.

... Why do I need to close my eyes?

[come on, man, you didn't think this was gonna be easy, did you?]

[he wouldn't be HIS program if it was.]

By closing your eyes you're blocking one of your senses. It's like... Removing a distraction. Closing a program that's not needed for the moment so it doesn't slow down the rest of the processes.

.... [he sounds doubtful, but ...] Arright ...





Now what?

When you picture the building don't just visualize the outside structure. Picture the rooms and furniture. Everything about it.

But if it doesn't exist, how do I know what's inside it?

That's what imagination is for, CLU. You use imagination to create all of that within your mind.
