[There's a frustrated little sigh, and then the clatter of baking tins. Then silence.]

I don't understand why this is so difficult. I've been trying to bake a cake all morning. I've been trying, and-

[A shuddery little breath.]

And I - can't - remember!

This is ridiculous. It's a cake, for Landsakes! I've made cakes all my life, this should not be hard! And if that weren't enough, I can't seem to...I - I can't seem to...

[This is a little embarrassing for her to admit.]

I try looking at cake recipes and once I look away...I forget the steps entirely.

...I'm going to try again.

[OOC: Jane's stumbled upon her loss, but she's still a bit too stubborn to admit it to herself. She's in the kitchen, covered in flour and somewhat distraught if you'd like some one-on-one interaction, but if not feel free to respond.]

[ A curious pause. ]

Eh? Jane? Are you okay?

[She laughs a little shakily.]

I'm fine! I'm alright. Peachy-keen, I promise, Uru!

I just think this seasons room warrants a little sleuthing.

[amiable]

Sleuthing? Detective?

[cyan_maid]

Yes! I love detectives, perhaps almost as much as I love baking! I absolutely love investigating things.

[amiable]

What sort of things?

[cyan_maid]

Any kind of mystery I happen upon, so long as no one tries to stop me!

[amiable]

Have you solved mysteries at home?

[cyan_maid]

I've tried to! My Dad would never let me solve the biggest one, but I know I've got the brains to do it!

[amiable]

What was it? The biggest one?

[cyan_maid]

How my Poppop passed away, of course! From what little I know, it was definitely a murder, but he never lets me investigate it!

[amiable]

-- What? Murder?

[cyan_maid]

It involved a tall shelf, a ladder, and a mysterious young woman in a suspicious hat. That's all I know.

[A pause.] I feel like I might be monopolizing the conversation a tad...

[amiable]

No, you're not! [ She still sounds a little shaken. ] What's a poppop... a relative? Why would somebody hurt them?

[cyan_maid]

Are you sure? I wouldn't say no to hearing a bit about yourself, Uru!

Poppop Crocker is my grandfather. I don't know why anyone would hurt him! From what I've seen of his work, he was simply a jovial comedian! I think there must be more to it all than that, though.

[amiable]

Ah, but... [ Her voice drops and she sounds very sincere. ] I'm sorry about what happened to your grandfather. You sound like a very strong person to look into what happened to him.

[cyan_maid]

[Oh dear, does it really sound so sad?]

Oh! Oh, it's alright, it's really alright. I never got a chance to meet him before it happened, it's really alright! Thank you, though...

Well, I suppose it could be brave in a way. I think it's more to do with curiosity, to be honest.

[amiable]

[ Considering she's spent a lot of time with the Batfamily, she thinks it's nothing short of brave. ]

But not everyone would do that! It sounds a little scary, to be honest...

[cyan_maid]

I'm not scared. Whatever the answer might be, I'll find it one day. Probably not here, of course, but perhaps when I'm back home I'll figure it out.

Oh, we shouldn't dwell on this. It doesn't do any good to dwell on what you can't change.

[ There's just silence on her end for a moment. Maybe she's experiencing an epiphany!!

But really, Jane's words remind her of the things she's said in the past to people. She feels even more silly that she almost lost sight of that just now. ]

[ In a bright voice: ]

You're right! If we focus on the past all the time, we can never walk forward and focus on the happier things!
