[There are some dainty sniffles coming from the journal today, as if they came from someone who had just begun to recover from a cry, and not even the good kind of cry that makes you feel better. A couple cake batter fingerprints appear, and then are hastily wiped away. That only smudges the paper.]

Oh...I'm sorry about that, I...

[A pause. Jane blows her nose.]

I was...cleaning up a mess...in the kitchen. I'm really sorry about all of that batter...in the sink...that's my fault...!

[Oh sugar, her voice is cracking. Better make this quick.]

I think I'm...ready to admit to my loss...

All of you were right. I'm sorry I was so prickly about it before.

Oh... [Her tone lowers] I wish I did, believe me. I don't think anyone as figured that out yet.

Is your loss a really bad one?

It is to me. I can't...I can't bake anything. At all.

[That's pawful! Actually, to Nepeta it's not really that bad of a loss, but it must have meant a lot to Jane, so she won't say otherwise.]

Not even if someone helps you?

I've tried to bake with assistance.

It...didn't turn out well.

[There's a sniff and the soft clatter of dishes in a sink in the background.]

Umm, well... Can you still make other things? It is purrobably not the same as baking sweets, but purrhaps it could be just as fun?

I think I can.

No, it would not be the same at all. But it's all I have, so I'll have to make do with it.

Maybe you'll learn to really like it! And you can make up all sorts of recipes and cook all sorts of things...

Oh! And if you need any meat to cook, I can hunt it down for you!

Of course! I am one of the fiercest huntresses around. I've been doing it for sweeps.

[She doesn't know what a sweep is, but that's irrelevant right now!]

How exactly DO you hunt, Nepeta?

Well, you know how an Earth lion hunts? Just like that. I only hunt out of necessity, though, and I don't let any part of the beast go to waste.

[Uuh. Well that's pleasant to know.]

Is that, um, something you have to do often at home?

Yep! It's purrtty much how I survived on Alternia. You have to be fierce to survive where I lived!

Were the creatures from your home really that fearsome?

Totally fearsome. Some of them even ate trolls!

[Like lions and tigers and bears?] Oh my!

Were there many creatures like that?

Oh yeah. Nearly all of them were like that! Most trolls just knew how to avoid them and what places not to go to if they weren't purrpared to face the beasts.

But me? I took them on all by myself! [Well, she figures her lusus must have been there, too. If only she could remember that.]

Oh nooo! D: She does't remember her lusus?!?

Gosh, troll life sounds tough! And I bet those beasts are just one little part of it!

I'm glad you're capable enough to take on such beasts on your own, though.

Me, too! And as much as I really miss Alternia, I have to admit that if I had to be anywhere else, I would be in Purradisa. It's not so bad.

You really think so? Even with losses, and sudden changes to the world? You would rather be here?

When the bad stuff isn't happening, it's a really safe place for me and my friends to be. I liked it a lot better when all twelve of us were here together, but I know they'll come back soon. I just have to be patient.

[And by safe she means there is no Jack Noir and they can wish for sopor for Gamzee.]

[She thinks about it for a minute, and then she chuckles weakly.] I suppose anything would be safer after a life of fighting hoards of ferocious creatures. You have me there.

It wasn't really such a bad planet, but it did take thick skin to live there. That's just how us trolls roll.

Anyway, the point is that if you ever need me to get you some good meat, I am more than happy to help.
