003 - Arf?
[Chell is actually outside today, sitting near the duck pond, watching the floating birds in utter fascination. She's never seen ducks, so she doesn't know what they eat. But she does have some bits of cookies and bread in her pocket. Every time she wishes up food, she stows a little away, just in case there should come a time when she can't find food like there was back in the facility. Right now, she is eating a little only slightly stale bread, and tossing some into the pond for the ducks to eat.
If Chell were being honest, she'd say she's a little lonely. If she even knew what loneliness is. So idly she opens her journal. She doesn't know how to filter messages to individuals, so she writes this message with the person's name at the beginning, in hopes that they'll see it when they flip open their journal... And she really doesn't mind if anyone else sees.]
Nick
How are you? And where do you live?
[She stares at the duck pond for a few minutes more. The birds are mesmerizing to her. And as she stares, she thinks. It would be very nice to have a friend like that, an animal friend she could share her food with and who would follow her around. That sort of thing. So she pens another question, this time to the castle at large.]
I know some of you have animals. How did you get them? I don't mean animals who can talk and write. I mean... [She taps her pen on the page, trying to think of the words.] like animals to follow you around, who you can share your food with, like... [She remembers one animal from her childhood, one she had always wanted, but been unable to have due to her brother's ever-present allergies.] Like a cat.

/sob why
[This isn't working. At all. He opts for a different method of dealing with the problem--distraction!--and flings open a door off the main room into a smaller, blue-lit room.]
Wanna see Magikarp and Sunflower?!?
Nick used Distraction! It was Super-effective!

With a flourish, he nearly flings his arm off pointing into the room.]
See! That's Magikarp, there, in the tank!
[Sure enough, there's a massive fish tank lining one of the room's longer walls. It houses an enormous, ugly, orange goldfish with yellow whiskers, which is puckering soundlessly at the glass and staring at Chell. Although it's a terribly unattractive and useless Pokemon, Phoenix strolls over to it and leans against the tank, affectionately "petting" the glass.]
He was all alone when I found him--and unwanted--and he needed someone to take care of him.
[And, at the time, Phoenix desperately needed to be taking care of someone, too, but he doesn't say that part.]

He's very pretty. I like him. Especially his whiskers because they are yellow. I like yellow things.
[She's grinning. Making fish faces at the Magicarp is good fun, especially seeing if he'll make fishfaces back.]
no subject
Ah, yeah, if you look in the tank you might also see my newest pet, Francis.
[He crouches down and spots the creature he's looking for, gesturing to "her" as well. It's a large lobster, waddling about in the back of the tank. Phoenix has no idea what its gender is, but every time he tries to touch it, it ends up hurting him. As such...]
I named her after this girl I used to know. It's... befitting of a lobster, really.

Looks like touching her might be painful. Wonder if she pinches Magicarp ever.
[Legitimate question, no? Well, Magicarp at least doesn't seem to mind his new housemate from what Chell's seeing at least? At least not at this moment.
She likes Nick's fishy friends. They remind her of something. Digging back in her memory, she doodles a little starfish in the margin of her journal for Nick.]
I remember these too. Someone told me about them once. But I don't know what they are called. Help?
[Sometimes Chell remembers what things look like, and it drives her crazy. She can remember so clearly what something looks like, but not what that thing is called. It's almost like the word is just gone. Like something she may once have known but had no need for so her mind discarded it.]

A star...?
[But what does that have to do with lobsters?
And then he puts two and two together.]
Oh! You mean a starfish, huh? They're pretty cool. I don't have a pet one, though.
[A laugh.]
Just these two. And Sunflower, but she's not a fish.
no subject
She shoots Nick a questioning look before writing again.]
What's a Sunflower?
no subject
[He calls out her name a couple of times, and Sunflower the small, brown, fuzzy fox-like creature comes bounding in.
Meet Phoenix's Eevee.]
no subject
She's so pretty!!!
no subject
Phoenix smiles.]
Isn't she? She's a good girl, too. Very sweet.
no subject
She's sooo soft. And pretty. And yes she's a good girl.
