Fenris, when you have the time, I gathered those books I promised you. If you like, I can sit and help you read some till you have the hang of it as well.

I have something I want to discuss with you both. It's a surprise for someone, but I might need your help to do it.

[And with those taken care of, one can now find Ashura sitting in the kitchen, pouring through a large sweets recipe book, seeming to focus on cakes, cupcakes, and frostings. His brow is furrowed slightly in concentration, manicured nails drumming the top of the counter as he made little notes to the side in his notebook - naturally filtered to himself, he's learned his lesson by now.]

They are aimed at young readers, but for a start they will do. Once you get the hang of it I can can select some more complicate books. How has your writing come along?

It is getting better, steadily. I am even figuring out the letter G.

[He takes a few books, squinting at the titles] What sort of tales do they contain?

Some contain sort of fables, others are more simplistic than even that. They are meant for children, but because of that they are very good for introducing someone to reading.

[Fenris nods and opens the first one]

All right, why do you not try it yourself to start and I will help you as we go? Take it one syllable at a time, no need to rush.

[La la la, he starts reading the generic story, after a while stumbling on a word. Let's call it 'commitment']

Most of the time words are spelled like they look and sound. When you get to something like this, try breaking up the letters into small parts and sounding them out that way.

[He really is grateful, of course, more than a gruff 'thank you' is asking a bit much from Fenris. He turns a page again, doing as was asked, breaking down the larger words and sounding them out carefully]

_{[He thinks a minute and then picks one out, handing it to him. It is thicker than the first and has less pictures in it, but it still somewhat simple. It is entitled - Hank the Cowdog.]}

[He begins to read again, getting caught on words a little more easier this time, looking to Ashura for help each time he finds a point where he is struggling]

Well, that was not so bad.

_{[He takes out some books on that same level and hands him a journal - not the magic journal, but just plain one.]}

This might help you too - read some of the book and on words you have trouble on - start writing them out. As you do, sound out the letters. That can make it easy when you are on your own.

[Fenris inclines his head in gratitude. He'll never get used to people doing things for him just out of the goodness of their hearts. It always amazes him when people actually give a damn enough about him to do so]

Think nothing of it, Fenris. You should be proud of yourself - you are doing well, and you had the will to learn and ask for help. Things not easily done in someone your age.

[Fenris makes a soft noise of amusement ] I do not even know what 'my age' is. Elves tend to remain youthful for longer, and I do not remember my birthday.

Hmm, but for you to have a full adult body would mean, I would assume, a minimum twenty years unless something happened to accelerate it. My race is long-lived as well, so I have my full height at about eighteen or twenty, though I was not a fully adult til forty.

Well, if you do not remember it, pick a day you would like it to be.

No, we are not long lived. It's said our race used to be immortal, before humans arrived and sullied our people. But if this is true or some...Dalish story, I am unsure.

I do not know if I would wish to even have one. It seems pointless, if it is not the true day. [Plus, you know. Socialising. Parties. People...hugging :|]

Ah, then you go against what most of the elvish stories out there.

Well, you do not have to, but it is a nice thing to celebrate, now and then. And it marks your passing in the world, though this could just as easily be done by the turns of the new year days.

...I suppose that would be a point. I do not think I would be comfortable with people wishing me well. [Expecting him to socialise, noooo]
