DAY FOUR MASS POST

[So, now you've gathered most of your Virtues, it's time to try to use the blasted things. It seems it will take a lot of trail and error, though. You'd think someone would have been good enough to provide instructions.

There are six Virtues in your possession now, with the seventh available today in the movie theatre. But it seems the infected have been warned, so you might have a fight on your hands!]

[Dairine raises her hands in a "spare-me" gesture.]

Don't look at me! I avoided your head.

[This would be about the time both of them will notice someone quickly making their way. Yes, Steve ran all the way here. He's looking pretty surprised to see Dairine in there with Clint. Hey, at least he looks sane enough.]

How did you get in there? [He'll let you two out in a minute.]

Speak of the devil...

[Dairine turns towards the door with a bright grin, one that is definitely not fake or hiding her nerves thankyouverymuch, and waves.]

Steve! Oh, you know, things happened. Thanks for coming so quickly. [Avoiding the question tralalaaa~]

Magic, cap.

[And that should answer everything. Clint stands, backing off from the door. He's not going to be antagonistic in this.

...He looks exhausted.]

You used magic to break into his cell. [Disapproval is pretty heavy in his voice. He can see that nothing bad is happening here though despite all odds. The fact Clint didn't immediately take Dairine hostage in order to get out is telling enough that the worst is probably over. Steve also doubts the girl is infected too since she doesn't seem sick or crazy. He'll open up the cell now.]

We're going to have a long talk about that later. Both of you, out.

[BARTON! Blow her cover why don't ya?! Dairine averts her eyes, scowling.] How else was I supposed to cure him?

[Gaaah, Steve is gonna let her have it. Damnnit, damnnit, damnnit! Why does she always get in the worst trouble when she tries to help others?! It's not fair! Once Steve opens the cell, Dairine sulks out. She'll go right passed them unless someone stops her.]

[Putting his hands on his head to walk out, just so there's no way he can be fooling them, he pauses before he leaves the cell.]

I know I'm the last person to be asking favours, but don't be too hard on her, captain, she did it to cure me.

[And then he's just going to keep walking, hands on his head.]

[Steve won't say anything to Clint in return though he'll keep it in mind when he goes after Dairine... like now.] Wait up a minute.

[Dairine grits her teeth, reeeally not looking forward to this discussion. But she stops.]

[And if you're paying attention, you'll just see Barton slip off to his room.

He'll leave you two to talk.]

[He is, but that's fine by Steve. He walks up to Dairine and keeps the advice in mind. His gut reaction is to be angry. Clint could have killed her. She could have died. The thought of it makes him feel sick to his stomach. He takes a calming breath in hopes of avoiding a knee jerk reaction.]

Why didn't you tell me what you were up to?

[Dairine stays put as Steve approaches. At the question, she brushes her hair out of her face in a way that was meant to look casual. Really though it's a nervous gesture, one to help gather her thoughts.]

Well, I just-- [Pause. Restart.] I didn't want you to worry...

[He's a quiet a moment. She's so mature for her age that sometimes he forgets that Dairine is just a kid that wants to help. The anger simmers down some more before he patiently starts again.]

I'm always going to worry about you. You're my friend and this place... it's even more dangerous than usual. I know you meant well, but seeing you in there with a man who was trying to kill me not that long ago... [He pauses there before continuing again. It's hard to say it.] It scared me. There was a second where I thought-

[That he'd use her to get him. Clint had been so angry with him, with everything. It wasn't a stretch to think he'd hurt or kill a young girl in a fit of anger.]

I get that you want to help. I know how it feels to want that more than anything and having to deal with people telling you that you can't... but I need you to have back up even if it's just for my sake. I couldn't bear it if anything happened to you. Do you understand me?

[She's not "just" anything. Dairine is a capable wizard. And yet there are times when her age starts to show, like when she's being reprimanded for something she's done. She starts out defensive.]

You think you're the only one he tried to kill? Trust me -- I knew what I was getting into. I could handle it-

[But Dairine stops as his words sink in. He had been frightened. Realizing how the situation must have looked to Steve, her standing only arms length away from a highly-trained agent who only this morning was ranting about killing them both, she can see why. It would kill her to see something bad happen to him. Of course he would feel the same way about her.

Powers, she feels like a heel.]

...I understand. [Whether she will be able to follow through or not, only time will tell.]

Did he-? [Try to kill you? He can't bring himself to finish it, but he's a shade whiter. Steve still feels a little better about her understanding. He nods gravely.]

Thank you. I'll be more careful too.

Try to shoot me in the face? [She fills in for him. Steve might rather not know, but with as freaked out as he looks, it's probably best not to leave him wondering.] Yeah, though he didn't get very far.

You better. Lots of people would be upset if we lost you.

Yeah, that's what I was going for. [Steve wishes he had punched him harder now. Welp.] You know they'd be upset about you too.

Don't hold it against him. I was hardly the only one he attacked, so it wasn't personal. Poor guy feels guilty enough as it is. [There's a pause as Dairine thinks back to Barton's initial confusion, his face when he realized what he had done. The guilt she felt now was a tiny blip compared to what he must be feeling. 'Poor sod. Of all people, why did it have to be him?' Then Dairine almost smiles, the smallest hint of her usual mischief.] Anyway, I've been shot at by much nastier weapons than a bow and came out no worse for wear. I'll live.

[His second statement brings out an unusually sober expression.] I know. I can only hope they'll be proud, or at least understand... if it comes to that.

It's too early for you to talk about people understanding if it comes to that. [There's a stubbornness in his voice. Steve would rather die than let that ever happen.]

But, don't worry. I'm not going to be too hard on Clint. He can't that this keeps happening to him.

Better too early than too late. [That would never happen. Dairine would protect him, even if it killed her. (Which is exactly their problem.)]

Good. He feels bad enough as it is.

We'll see. [He doesn't know Clint well enough yet to be sure.] Ready to run off and cure some people?

[DOES THIS MEAN THE TALK IS DONE?]

Well, they're not gonna get cured by themselves.

[Yes, he's made his point already.] Let's go then. [He'll happy run off to do some hero stuff.]

[The worst behind them, Dairine smiles for real this time.]
