In which Cimorene has some questions [Dictated]

Since it appears that I will be here some time, I suppose I have some questions to ask. Would anyone be willing to give me lessons in anything? I'm not picky about the topic, although I would like to continue my studies in fencing, politics, cooking and magic.

[Cimorene was hopeful that no one would object. Back home it simply wasn't done for a princess to learn such things. But from the people she had met so far in the castle she thought that maybe the attitude here would be different. More like the dragons. After all, Kazul had always encouraged her studies.]

I'm not aware of any type of magic you can learn without having the talent for it ahead of time. So unless you are looking to simply learn the theory I couldn't help you.

Though if somebody contact you and proves me wrong on that account I would love to hear from them.

Even theory I would appreciate. I'm afraid I was only ever to learn the basics.

Every world's magic has a different take on the "basics", so to speak. There are a few things that translate but, well, there's no universal rules quite yet. [He's working on that part]

I see. This might be more difficult than I hoped.

I've known few annemer scholars of magic in my time, but some have known as much if not more than the wizards, so perhaps there is hope. It's a worthy goal, if you have the time. Perhaps just pick a type of magic and go from there.

If I may ask, what is magic like in your world? Assuming of course it exists. [Though he doubts she'd ask if it didn't]

I don't think there could ever be any harm in simply learning. I doubt I could ever become an expert, but I would like to learn all I can just the same.

I suppose that would depend on what sort of magic. There are many different kinds. Some of it is part of the world and some of it is within creatures. Some of it is used and some of it is wild.

Which kind were you most acquainted back home?

What sort of magic were you studying?

The Court Magician taught me how to turn myself invisible before Father stopped the lessons. And I've been been learning what I can of dragon magic recently.

I see. I don't know much about dragons, or their magic, unfortunately.

I'm not surprised. There are not many outside of the dragons who know anything about it.

I imagine they wouldn't be too keen on sharing. But they taught you?

Kazul taught me some. She thought it was a good thing for me to know if I was going to be organizing magical objects.

Oh? Were you cataloging things for them?

[He sounds genuinely curious about this... it's always interesting to learn what was happening on worlds removed from the ones he knew.]

I've been working on getting the King's treasure caverns sorted.

That sounds like quite the task.

There aren't really any politics here. It's pretty much a low-key anarchy.

I would like to learn more of it all the same.

In general and any specifics anyone could teach me.

I think any specifics you ask for are going to conflict with each other. Since people come from a ton of different worlds.

Thy interests are quite diverse.

By necessity I'm afraid. I was able to begin lessons in many different skills, but the lessons were always stopped before I could learn much.

Well, I can offer lessons in politics, 'though I would become something akin to a study partner if we were to move beyond the realm of Equestrian politics.

Even a beginning would be helpful. I've been learning something of dragon politics, but I am certain that that is very different from other sorts of politics.

[dragons in Equestria don't seem to have a government, so she can't really say.] Mayhaps. Forsooth, the dragons of thy world may be different from those I know.

The library here is stocked with books from many different realms. As such, that would be an exceedingly good place to start.

I am beginning to get that idea yes. Although I did meet a young dragon here who was very insistent on volunteering to taste my cooking efforts. In appetite they seem similar.

[that gets a laugh] Be there any chance that this particular dragon is named Spike?

That is the name it gave. [Cimorene knew better than to give possible offense by assigning a gender to a dragon that didn't sound old enough to have chosen for itself.]

Oh. My apologies. He sounded young enough to not have chosen his gender yet, and I didn't wish to offend.

I believe our dragons may be different from thy dragons. That is the first time I have e'er heard of such a thing.

I could teach you how to pick locks. Never know when that might come in handy.

[Cimorene had the feeling that her father would have strongly disapproved of her learning how to pick locks. Of course, he had disapproved of nearly everything interesting she had ever tried to learn. She suspected that picking locks was one of those things that proper princesses simply didn't do.

All the more reason to learn.]

It does sound very useful.

No problem, then. We can start off with something useful, like castle door locks, and then move onto anything you want from there - disarming traps, more complex locks, padlocks, anything like that.

Sure thing. Just get yourself a set of basic lockpicks and we can start whenever you're ready.

I'm not sure how much help I'd be with magic, either - though I'm a fair hand at the others. What style of fencing, if I may ask?

Any, really. I've been getting by with a magical sword, but it really isn't a good thing to rely on those.

Unless you were the one to make the sword, no, generally not. I know both the rapier and the jian, though I'm probably several decades out of practice with both. It tends to come back with some work, though.

I've never used either one.

Hmm. What does the blade of the type you're used to look like? That's probably the fastest way for me to identify it.

Thin and flexible. Plain, but well balanced.

Is all of the blade thin, rather than in one direction? Because it sounds like it may be a rapier, if so.

Magic? What kind of magic do you do?

Not much. I never got past turning myself invisible from the court magician. Father made the lessons stop after that. I've been learning some dragon magic, but of course that has very little in common with any other sort of magic.

Turning yourself invisible? I haven't done that before. I can do glamor to make myself look like someone else, though. And Astral Projection. That's a tough one, though. That took a while to learn.

[a pause] Dragon magic?

It is rather different from humans magic.

Well I figured that much. [She laughs] I just don't have much experience with dragons is all.
