042 Tales Told

[The Gryphon is still on the beach today. Mostly because she's just plain tired of the castle. Far too many beheadings and too much screaming for her taste. She yawns broadly, bringing one claw up to scratch a few new feathers coming in by her beak before peering down at the journal laying open nearby. Normally she'd just pester the Mock Turtle but he's nowhere to be found so she'll have to make do with some of the irritating newcomers who've shown up recently]

Some of you must have tales to tell. Histories. I should like to hear them. [She pauses] On second thought if you're calling this place nonsense then wherever you come from must be boring, indeed. I'm bored enough without being further bored by histories of uninteresting places.

[She sighs, stretching her wings]

Hmmm. Have any of you heard of the Lobster Quadrille? I could do with a dance. Now let's see if I can just remember the words...

[She starts humming a tune softly to herself]

At least pick something graceful, like a dolphin or something.

Why would the dance be named after a dolphin when you dance with the lobsters? That's just nonsense.

Phoebe? I'm afraid you are mistaken. I am the Gryphon. And this is no joke. The Lobster Quadrille is a traditional dance. I could tell you how to do it if you'd like.

I miss it when the weirdest thing I had happen to me was waking up in a bed with a furry peanut.

[kungfuwitch]

A furry peanut? That is what generally happens when you fall asleep while eating.

No, really. That's what he looks like.

He? There is a creature that resembles a furry peanut?

[whichwayyoulean]

Yeah, but I'm not getting into that while you're all crazy.

[kungfuwitch]

Crazy? I'm afraid you're mistaken, sir. I'm not mad. If you'd like to speak with someone who's mad you'd be better off speaking with the hatter.

Yeah you know what? No. I already tried that and it didn't go well.

[kungfuwitch]

Oh? She may have been having an especially mad day. Perhaps the Dormouse or the March Hare. They're quite mad as well, though not nearly as much as the Hatter.

I think madness is pretty much a matter of opinion right now.

[kungfuwitch]

Of who's opinion? I would think that those who are mad would hold the opinion that those who are not are truly the mad ones.

[whichwayyoulean]

That's why the sane people have the opinions.

[spongetastic]

[there is something about this voice he really likes...]

I'm a fairly good storyteller.

[She finds herself smiling without even being entirely sure why]

Are you, indeed? Let's have a tale, then.

A maiden came upon a pond in the middle of the wood. At the very center of the pond was a pearl, but the maiden couldn't swim. She tried using the branches of trees but the pearl was too deep to reach. Feeling discouraged, she sat by the pond and cried.

She cried so much her tears flooded the pond, and the pearl came right up to her.

[kungfuwitch]

It's not often you hear tales of tears resulting in something closer to a happy ending.

Do you have any others? I would like to hear more.

[spongetastic]

Dear gryphon, I would tell you stories forever.

[kungfuwitch]

[She smiles... in a beaky kind of way]

And I would listen to them forever.
