[Steve hasn't been in the best of moods following his conversation with Katniss. That isn't going to stop him from trying to sound positive as he addresses the castle at large. His delivery is noticeably flat however.]

That was some trip, huh? Did everybody get back okay?

So I might have jumped through the mirror after someone. I know I should have said something sooner, but everything got a little funny in there. Just thought I'd let you know in case you were wondering where I went.

[There's a long pause before he leaves the filter with a question:] How have you been?

[He'll leave his journal open while he goes to work on a project. He started it in early December after Peeta's announcement about Rue's departure. Steve had promised Peeta she wouldn't be forgotten. Since Peeta's chosen tribute on his world was a painting of Rue, Steve had thought he'd try the same thing. Life gets busy though. He never got as far into the project as he would have liked.

With Peeta gone and what he learned about Katniss before going through that mirror still fresh in his mind, he is recommitting himself to finishing it. If anyone would like a word with him, they'll find him working in front of an unfinished painting of a little girl by a lake.]

Then I guess you're always needed. I haven't seen you shy away from a problem yet.

[Personally, she doesn't feel like she does anywhere near enough to help her fellow residents.]

What did she need you for Dairine?

To ensure she did not try anything self-destructive.

So the same reason as me. [There's a lengthy pause here.] How does she seem to you?

Distraught. Completely and utterly distraught. She's still soldiering on, which is a good sign, but underneath that she seems lost and lonely. Like she's moving just to keep her thoughts from swallowing her up.

Yeah... I thought it might be something like that. Look I won't pretend I understand how a girl's mind works so I need your input. Is there anything I can do? That we can do for her?

I care about her. I just want to help if I can.

Girls' minds don't work that differently than boys. But OK...

Right now, Katniss needs some space. A lot of things have happened, both here and back home, and she needs to come to terms with them. That's something she must do by herself. But at the same time, she needs to know that she's not alone. That there are still people who care and will help her if things get too rough.

What we need to do is remind her that we're here for her, without forcing the issue.

And how do we do that?

By giving her space, but keeping in touch.
