A Horse As White As Snow [ dictation ]

As some of you may know, recently there have been wards put up for the protection of the people of the Castle. While I believe some are permanent, mine will need recharging now and then. A fact I wish I could avoid, but with a node to connect the casting to, it must draw energy from a far more finite source.

So, I would ask that if anyone is interested, I would teach them how to recharge the spell in the event that I am no longer able to. It is not hard, but we would need to see how are magics mesh. If you want to, please either contact me, or meet me in the Chimera Headquarters at one o'clock.

We can meet in the Chimera Headquarters. I keep a work room there, magicked to protect magic from leaking and damaging others if there is an accident.

Is it near the other workrooms?

[ He could probably even meet Vanyel in the hall for workrooms, if that was the case. ]

Yes, this one just happens to be mine. I don't know if you can tell from the feel of my magic or not, but I can meet you in the main room and lead you there.

[ He'll be getting up now. Maybe that's able to be heard. ]

All right. I shall wait for you in the room, just knock. I want to put some extra protections before we begin.

[ It takes him a little while, but he'll eventually find the right door.

Or maybe he is knocking at quite a few in the area and eventually knocks on the inhabited one. ]

_{[ Vanyel released the spells guarding the door and opened it up, smiling when he saw Duke. ]}

Good, you found me. Come in.

_{[ He motioned for the other to come in, belatedly realizing the other could not see it and simply stepped aside to let him into the rather bare room - it only had a two stools, and a table that was scattered with a few gem stones. ]}

[ Duke takes a few steps in, listening. He can't figure out where anything is, but it doesn't sound particularly busy so he takes another step. ]

_{[He reached down, touching the other's wrist gently to ask permission.]}

[ Duke's shoulders twitch a little, but his hand turns so Vanyel can grasp it easier. ]

_{[ He takes it lightly, to lead and not drag, bringing Duke into the room and settling him on one of the sparse stools he kept. He let go and took the other, sighing.]}

In front of you I have several precious gems. In my world, we can use them as focus stones to increase the power of our spells by gathering magic in them.

... Containers, which accept magic more easily?

[ A slightly interested lean. The idea is somewhat knew to him. ]

I suppose that is a way of looking at it. Everyone has their own specific stone they work well with - for instance, my Aunt worked best with amber. I work best with pearl. The smoother and less rough it is, the better.

Once the magic is stored, it can be accessed again, or fed into a large spell.

[ Duke nods slowly. ]

Aside from storage preference, somewhat familiar. Some do not work as well with some elements as with others.

Yes, exactly.

I figured that if I could find people that could use my stone that is already charged and connected to the shielding spell, simply refilling it will not be to large an issue.

... I think... I would have to feel how you're doing it once or twice, before I could know what can do that is similar, or start working on a way to mimic what you have done.

[ He blinks once, 'looking' slightly more at Vanyel. ]

... Unless an added concentration of magic around you as you work would cause problems?

It's traditional, yes. Did you have something specific in mind?

And I'll come see your spell demonstration - I didn't get much of a chance to when we were all busy with the wards.

I had thought that this time I might manage to treat you some treats from my world. They might not be as impressive as the dishes you present, but... I will do my best.

Haha, I do appreciate it. I thought my rooms would be fine? It is still a bit chilly to try anywhere outdoors.

That might be best. You can never tell what might happen if our magics should clash.

Indeed - though your system sounds somewhat more familiar than, say, Duke's.

[He makes a gesture at Vanyel to lead the way]

_{[He nodded and led Clow into the small work room, that was barren save for a chair and a small table. On the table he had placed several types of stones, some precious and some not.]}

I thought it might be easiest if we work with focus stones. I brought several, to see if we have one we can both work with instead of starting with my preferred.

[As they enter the room, Clow pauses for a moment to put up his own barrier - which he knows will hold against anything he throws at it, at least - and then moves to inspect the stones]

Channels for your power, I assume?

Yes, to a degree. I can perform without them, but they can help me focus it to a greater extent, or store it if necessary, and act as anchors.

Interesting - I've played with them a little, but I end up doing drawn spell patterns if I need something more complex than what I can hold in my head at once.

They can help with large spells, but are largely useless in smaller workings. I've actually been thinking of a new spell to work with them - a great working, even...

Oh? Any ideas so far?

Well, it is more for my world than this one. A spell to help protect my country and my people, when... when the last of us is gone.

'Last of you'? Though - an anchored protection spell that large sounds both fascinating and risky

The Mage Gift is dying out, and not enough are being born with it to replace us as we die. And... more and more of us are dying. I can count on my hand those that remain, along with myself.

And it is. I will need the aid of every last Herald Mage, and I have no guarantee what I plan will work.

[Clow frowns]

That... doesn't seem proper. That the mage-gift should be fleeing your lands like that.

No, it does not seem proper. Others doubt me, but I know something is wrong. But I do not know what, and nothing I have done has given me proper answer.

I think... a dark power is behind it, but I cannot prove it, and other issues have taken precedence.

Given your dedication to your kingdom, I can see how matters would. And nobody else believes you who can investigate? It does sound rather sinister - and not at all how I've seen such gifts behave over generations.

What is there to truly investigate? The kingdom has more troubling issues than my own jumping at shadows and dark dreams.

[He raises an eyebrow]

More serious than the retreat of magic from a land?

I wish I could say it was the key issue, but truthfully, we have many other threats. It is not the entire retreat of magic. The Gifts in others could be considered Magic too, just not the Mage Gift.

I have been concentrating my efforts on making the people try and accept that the Mage Gift is not all powerful or even what they might most need. They need to begin relying that will send the Herald with the right Gift to meet their needs...

Mmm. Sounds like you're spread a bit then, there.

Yes, a bit, but we make do with what we have. At least Heralds themselves are being born, if not Mages.
