I haven't used my magic is sometime. I have to admit it's more painful than I imagined. (He likens it to moving a limb after an injury has mostly healed. It's safe to use his powers and he won't injure himself further if he's careful, but there's that deep-seated soreness that never goes away.) Vanyel has told me that there are other magic users around. If you have experience in being injured by magic, I would like to speak to you. I'm curious how you deal with the discomfort.
(Until he gets better answers, he is going to suck it up and bear it.)
Also, is it possible to wish for pets? Nothing too big, of course. I don't want it crowding Van out of the room. (Can you sense the amusement behind those words? He thinks the image is a little funny.) And maybe something that likes music?

Dictated
(That isn't pride talking. He wishes his body were less complicated. How many days had he spent confined to his bed after his powers went haywire? Goddess, he had nearly killed Van with them...twice!)
Are all creatures from your world frightening?
Dictated
Not all. There are cats and dogs, seafowl and songbirds. But there are odd ones as well - I had never heard of a 'horse' until we came here, for example. We used another creature. One is in the stables, if you would like to meet her.
Dictated
I would very much like to meet her. What is she like?
Dictated
[ Because falling asleep on someone would be weird and awkward.
Duke falls silent as he picks up his journal and starts walking. ]
She is a little headstrong, which I do not find terribly surprising as the one who hatched her was particularly... [ Lawful Stupid? Naive? ] stubborn. She gets along well enough with the other stable inhabitants, and is willing to follow directions when I bring up alternatives that would occur should she not.
Dictated
(Which is hard to come by most of the time.
At least it's hard to come by when he isn't entangled with Van.)So was Gala. It's a nice trait. (He might be biased, but having a headstrong companion can be an enjoyable - if not frustrating - experience.) I'd rather not have some poor creature who can't think for themselves.
Dictated
[ No, the last time he worked on something tricky, he ended up with a sword wedged in his ribs. Completely different from falling asleep. ]
It is, although not so much when one would like to be moving rather than standing and eating grass. But will is appreciated, as it can allow for noticing what a rider doesn't and acting on it.
Dictated
(No swords. He might have to deal with lightning bolts, fire and terribly, destructive wind, though.)
What does she like? What makes her happy? Maybe you could find a way to work together?
Dictated
[ Sounds like a Mordio - likely to knock him about and probably burn his clothing. ]
Generally, normal things. Carrots, sometimes apples. Believe she likes the beans that produce the drink coffee as well, otherwise I can't figure out why she's named as a variant. We get along well enough, but speed is an of and on thing.
Dictated
(Savil is one of a kind. She isn't his biological mother, but she is the mother of his heart.)
Cocoa? That is a strange craving for a...well...whatever she is. Does she look like a horse?
Dictated
[ Granted, he'd been fighting those nicknaming him. It might have something to do with it. ]
I assume so. Horses seem to lack the facial armoring or exact hoof shape similarity, and their hair seems thicker along the back and the tail is of a different construction. And ... Cappuccino, is her name.
Dictated
Dictated
... Thank ...you? [ He definitely sounds confused about it though. ]
A related - generally wild - breed has golden horns. If you don't have plans for today, other than seeking out aid for your magic.... could meet there?
[ He never knows when he's moving too fast or too slow. ]
Dictated
I'm only telling you what I see. (And he needs someone stubborn because, let's face it, he's stubborn.)
I'd be happy to meet you there. (A distraction from his own guilt would be nice.) Would I make a better impression if I brought along some cocoa beans?
Dictated -> Action
oh well. He'll give himself a headache thinking too hard on it. ]
Plain sugar or carrots are also acceptable. Occasionally sweet onions as well, although I tend to avoid those simply for the scent it gives her breath.
[ Duke will just... be in the stables, journal out of reach of the tan-brown creature, which is half interested in eating some of his hair. ]
Action
Upon spotting Duke, he walks up and smiles.)
No one likes onion breath.
Action
True enough. Believe garlic is worse, but those generally are without hint of sweet to entice her to eat them.
[ But the vaguely horse-like creature has spotted Tylendel and is curious, leaning out. Other than the horn-like plating that goes down its muzzle a bit and back off to shelter its neck, it looks like maybe someone crossed a deer with something that had a thick coat and more lionlike tail. ]
Action
I'd say give her whatever she wants. She's definitely one of a kind.
(Quite artistic, really.)
Can you really ride her?
Re: Action
Quietta are what horses are in other worlds. ... Possibly most worlds. I wouldn't have been much of a knight if I couldn't ride.
[ He turns back toward Cappuccino, finding where armored face meets with snout and rubbing. ]
... and holding onto something that goes across the ground is far easier than anything that flies.
Action
It's hard for me to imagine knights riding out on... (He shakes his head and opens the bag, offering Cappuccino a sugar cube.)
I've never been flying, though it feels like you're flying when you're riding a Comapnion.
Action
If you're imagining full armor, that may be part of the problem. [ Cappuccino is very interested in that sugar cube. Tylendel may be relieved to find that those are some very horse-like teeth. ]
.... That fast? [ That's the only thing Duke can think of to make something 'feel like flying'. ]
Action
What do you wear? (His expression softens and he strokes over Cappuccino's muzzle.) You are a unique lady, Cappuccino. I'm beginning to see your beauty.
(He nods faintly.) Companions can go over the roughest terrain as if it's nothing and they can run exceptional distances without tiring.
Action
There was a man who went about with his chest bared in the shape of a heart. How he survived as long as he did as captain I will never know.
That sounds very helpful for.. [ he pauses, trying to remember the word Vanyel had used. ] ... Circuits?
Action
Really? (He blinks and frowns a little. That sounds weird.)
Exactly. (Duke nails one of the main duties for Heralds.) We go where we're told and do what we're told. The journey isn't easy by a long-shot when you're talking about riding to the borders.
Action
Sounds similar, although without the monsters to make anything slower. Although your actions seemed to be less of .... military aim than otherwise. [ A guess, but Tylendel said 'we' so. ]
Action
There are rival Mages who can summon all sorts of beasts. (Like he had.) Companions can fight for their bonded. You never want to anger a Companion. They are intelligent and quick with those silver hooves.
Heralds can fight if needed, but we're mainly used by the monarchy to bring messages and peace to the kingdom.
