[This evening, Clem is outside, a small puppy on the end of a pink leash beside her. It currently seems to be happier rolling around in the grass rather than listening to the little girl trying to get it to do a trick.]

Sit. Siiiiiit. See, like this. [She tries to push the puppy's rump down, but it thinks it's playtime and rolls around some more. It gets Clem to laugh.]

No, no... [Sigh.] Okay, maybe we'll play for a little bit. It's time for a break, anyway.

[Aaaah. Tess comes a little closer, though she keeps a bit of distance. Eugh, dogs.]

So you must be Clementine, then. I hear you're a tough little lady.

[Clem stays with Copper, petting him. Well, it's not this lady's fault Lee said that. She shouldn't be upset.]

Sometimes.

[When she has to be, really, but Lee would say that.]

What's your name?

Tess.

Who is this little guy?

[A vague gesture to the dog.]

Copper. Do you want to pet him?

[Who wouldn't?]

[She scrutinizes the dog for a moment.]

I'll pass. I'm not much of a dog person.

[EXCUSE YOU. Clem looks offended.]

He doesn't bite.

[Okay, he nips a little, but it's more slobber than teeth.]

[Ugh, does she really have to reject Survivor Jr.? Tess frowns. What is she supposed to say to that? "People eat dogs or use dogs for entertainment, where I'm from?" Welcome to your bleak future? Christ.

So after a moment she relents –– she sighs and squats down to their level and offers a hand to the pup.]

Alright, fine.

See? He's soft.

[And wiggly. Clem keeps a firm hold on him so he doesn't jump all over Tess.]

[The opts to scratch him under the chin.]

Very soft. And judging by those big paws, he's gonna wind up pretty big, huh?

Bigger than me, probably. [But she wanted a big dog.] It's why I have to make sure he's trained well.

[Tess pulls her hand away as the puppy tries to mouthe her. Ew, no.]

That you better. Nothing worse than a big untrained dog.

Mm. He had an accident in Lee's room, earlier. He's still getting the hang of that...

Don't tell him.

[Clem cleaned it up, of course. Like a crime scene.]

[That gets a chuckle out of her.]

So now I'm implicated in your secret, huh? What do I tell him if he asks me?

Say you don't even know about Copper.

An even bigger lie, huh?

Probably not, since I don't think he'd just ask anyone about it.

Now why would I do a thing like that?

I dunno. [Tess is a stranger. Maybe she's just mean!

But Clem doesn't think so.]

Can you think of a reason?

[Maybe he tortures it out of her. Tess, you are talking to a kid.]

Nah, I'm just poking fun. As long as you don't let Copper do that again, I won't tell.

I won't. I'm getting better at telling when he needs to go, too. I've never had a dog before.

I had one as a kid. It's a big responsibility. But I'm sure Lee's told you all about that, huh?

Other people, too. I made sure to research before asking Lee if we could get one.

[Getting the puppy wasn't as fun as she imagined, but she's already in love with the dog.]

Smart kid.

I couldn't let him say no.

Are you friends?

[Who knows where that conversation went.]

Who? Me and Lee?

[She shrugs, but smiles.]

Yeah, I think we'll get along fine.
