[It's a bit late to be in the kitchen, really. But Mistress is a somewhat nocturnal creature (the night time is the best time for large and elaborate parties, after all), and she gets a little bored when the lobby calms down in the evening.

So tonight, she's decided to explore the kitchen. And though she's from medieval times, it's not the microwave or the refrigerator that's caught her eye. Oh no.]

What are all these foods, exactly? So many of them, in so many layers of wrapping.

[You see, Mistress is used to less-processed food, served with goblets of wine and mead. More modern foods have piqued her curiosity! She's currently sitting on the counter in the kitchen, journal perched in her lap.

Every single piece of processed cheese in the refrigerator has been unwrapped and laid out methodically. Ding-Dongs and Swiss Rolls have been stacked into thoughtful pyramids, with swords stuck through them. There's a large and explicit painting on the floor, done entirely in condiments (mayonnaise and a pickle have been put to particularly good use). Potato chips seem to have been of particular interest, as Mistress has opened and tried every flavor she found in the cupboards.

There are some greasy streaks in the journal as she wipes her hands.]

Are things not made fresh here? Everything seems to be in its own little bag and stored. And who created this barbeque potato chip? I need to know.

Not specifically, no. It goes well with loads of other deserts.

I see. What other desserts?

Cakes, dessert pies...

Actually, almost anything.

Very interesting. Can ice-creams come in any flavor?

[demontobeloved]

Mostly just sweet stuff, but I've seen some weird flavours. Common ones are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and mint.

[themistress]

Hmmn.

[Mistress wastes no time wishing up cartons of exactly those things. She sets aside her many bags of chips, and opens each individual carton, running one long finger through the top of the ice cream and tasting it.]

[Cole leans against a clean stretch of counter, not wanting to dirty his suit]

What d'you think?

[themistress]

[She seems to deeply consider this question, frowning a little with thought.] It's all quite sweet, isn't it? And rich. I suppose they're nice enough.

Well, sweet and rich is what they were going for. People often eat it by itself as a comfort food, but if I ever have it, I like it with something.

[themistress]

Yes, I can see this with cake, though it might be an overload of sugar.

Well, it's supposed to be a treat, more than anything.

[themistress]

If it's supposed to be a treat, why does it come in such large containers? Once you've eaten a serving, is there another use for ice-creams? It doesn't melt quickly enough...

They discovered that people like to "treat" themselves too often and cashed in on it.

[themistress]

What does that mean? Surely people of your time don't eat these entire boxes.

[demontobeloved]

Not all at once, no. That's what the freezer's for.

[themistress]

But why would anyone keep something they've already eaten part of?

[demontobeloved]

So they don't have to keep going and buying more.

[themistress]

Why not make more each time it's wanted?

[demontobeloved]

The process to make it in the worlds it's used is complicated. That, and power is needed to keep it frozen.

[themistress]

It seems like a great deal of work just for one dish. [Says the sorceress who employs an entire kitchen staff, including a chef just for croquembuche.]

The process is difficult, but they mass-produce it on a production line. People buy what they want in the stores, stick it in the freezer to have when they want, and they don't have to leave the house.

[themistress]

I can't imagine wanting to eat days-old food.

[demontobeloved]

Another reason the freezer's good. Keeps it fresh.

[themistress]

But why not just make it fresh each time?

[demontobeloved]

People don't have industrial ice-cream machines in their kitchens.
