You know, if all the information found in the book in that other world or whatever is true, it just makes the outsiders look more like scumbags. If I have a giant sentient castle munching on my soul, I'd rather know about it, you know? I don't think I'm really the only one, right? If you have more information, you can make a better decision. Maybe it'd have changed things...

Of course, I guess there hasn't been mass exodus, huh? Is it just that it would be too hard? There's some stuff set up out in the dead zone, but not enough to support everybody in the castle. People would actually have to work for their keep. Maybe it's easier to just pay tribute.

It sounds really ominous, doensn't it? That you're feeding something off your soul. If it's true. But I have to wonder then, what if souls regenerate or something? Maybe souls can heal like bodies do. I guess I don't know enough, but there might be some here who could talk about that. [A small amused sound.]

Though, the world outside is the most exciting thing here, too. We really are living in a world that hasn't been explored... and it's full of beautiful, magical mysteries out there. But even though there are ways we could get out, most people just stay in the castle all the time. Some adventurers.

[Anyway. Today Rin can be found out on the edge of the woods, in her usual haunt - under Alexstrasza's tree. She's leaned up back against the trunk with her journal over her knees, and her Arcanine sprawled out at her feet, enjoying the dappled sunshine.

Stubborn, mostly. A little angry, a little sad at times. You're after something. Revenge, maybe? A sense of justice done?

Vaguely, yes.

A couple years ago at home... more now, with me being in Paradisa and all... he and his henchmen killed my parents because of old family business. So I've been following him ever since as much as I can.

Hence the vengeance thing. I see.

A lot has happened then, I guess. I've met a lot of people... and had a lot of adventures... and here, it's been even longer.

Crowley, what do souls actually do?

Largely? They just sit there and suck in all the good and bad you've done in your lifetime like vacuum cleaners.

Are they really that important? You seem to get along fine without one.

That's because when the world ends, my place is sorted for me. If Hell wins, I go back there, if Heaven wins...well. I don't know. Probably cease to exist or...something.

But souls? Well, they're little weights to add to the power of Heaven and Hell. The Big Guys let you live your short lives, so they can manipulate you into being of use to them after you die.

So what do you think about this place eating off of them? If that's really what it's doing.

It's...disturbing. I'd hate to guess what sort of after-effects it has on them. After all, not even demons eat souls, just...taint them.

I wouldn't mind this place eating my emotions so much... at least they're renewable... [...] Although now that you mention it, maybe it's a different kind of idea of "soul" that it's eating.

I wouldn't be surprised. After all, it has to be feeding on something from those of us who don't have a regular sort of soul.

Me too... well, souls are important in his world. Except they just call it Soul. If you have a lot of Soul, you're more powerful, kind of.
