[Backdated to several days ago. Rin sounds kind of amused.]

This again...

I guess some traditions, the castle doesn't mind sticking to. If you're inclined to avoid getting kissed by just about everybody, I suggest you make your way to the dead zone outpost. It's up north. There's a teleport circle that'll take you out here if you have the code... that's in the basement. [Though she conspicuously does not share the passkey.]

As for that illness... interesting, again. I suppose plenty of people here don't remember the Giovani doctor who lived out in the dead zone - Giovani are bird people, by the way, they live out there.

Who does remember him? He talked about a sickness, didn't he? I wonder if it was the same one...

[Before Uru left, Rin had suggested a cake date for the two of them. A midnight cake date! Something a little silly but fun for it. It's a magical castle of tremendous beauty, after all. In that kind of place a midnight cake-eating party is something that could easily happen.

Uru's gone now and the cake never happened. One half of the party is still here, though. You could guess that Rin stewed for a while and then thought "fuck it" and threw cares otherwise to the wind.

As such, at midnight she's in the dining room, dressed in a fancy traditional kimono and eating her way fastidiously through a very fancy slice of cake. She has to be extra-careful not trail her long sleeves through the frosting, but she's doing a good job of it. Rin has even gone to the trouble of lighting some candles to arrange a small centerpiece. The journal is open at her elbow. Between neat bites she dictates into it.]

Before my friend left, we had this idea of eating cake at midnight. The idea was, we'd make a party of it, you know? [Bite.]

Well, it seems like a shame to scrap an idea just because she's gone now. I don't think she'd care for that kind of attitude. She'd probably have something encouraging to say about it being worthwhile to do something else.

Anyway. My point is, I'm having cake in the dining room. It's midnight now. If you want some, come and get it.

[Written in fairly anonymous print. Yeah, driven in large part by Uru's departure - though to be honest now, one person leaving isn't just about one person leaving. It brings back memories of all the people who left before.]

I can't believe how much my perspective on people coming and going has changed here. I wish I could say it was for the better. I go back and forth on how this castle really is and how awful it actually is or isn't, but then there's always a reminder waiting to slap you in the face, right?

Someone leaves again. All our connections here are tenuous. Depending on the whim of the castle someone who'd been here for years could disappear, and then in a matter of days everyone who knew about them could disappear, and what with how the journals restarted, it's possible that no one who came in could even know who they were or why anyone cared about them. Like they'd never even been here.

Maybe that's what some people really want. People hate it here anyway. But it's weird.

[Rin is outside, sitting under Alexstrasza's tree - yet another memento of someone who was here and then gone and left hardly any trace except for those who know where to look.

She's bundled up to deal with the autumnal weather and leaning back against the warm flank of her Arcanine, flipping through the journal idly. Doing nothing and with nothing in particular in mind to do. She could probably find a job, but who cares? Nothing can't wait.]

Galadriel )

[After Galadriel confirms that Legato is no longer in the castle, well... Rin has to take a minute and share the good news.

She sounds a little weird. Mostly it's because she can barely believe he's gone. Legato has been a burden and responsibility for her one way or another for a long time. She feels relieved and weirdly... sad. It would have been nice if he could have changed here, become a different person, a better person. But that didn't happen and now he's gone. With any luck, he'll stay that way.]

[Backdated to the fifth because Rin is a speedy traveler and that's how I do]

[Maybe she doesn't quite realize the journal is recording yet, maybe she just can't help it. Either way the book records a soft, drawn-out hiss from Rin, and then a contented little noise. The page is damp, all that humidity, and yes, there's the soft sound of water splashing picked up from the surroundings too!]

Mm... nothing beats hotsprings after you've been traveling. [She sounds so relaxed.]

Anyway. I've been thinking lately. You know, about all these castle revelations and things... and people coming back from world changes... an idea I had a long time ago, actually. What if we're not actually the original people we think we are? Like, what if we're all copies. Like writing out one scroll on another, you know? So we, our original selves, are still at home doing our thing, not even missed, and besides that we're here.

[She actually sounds just really throaty and indolent as she says all this, not upset.] What if you didn't have a home to go to? What if your home wasn't yours, and you, the you that you reading this were copied from... what if they were still there? If they didn't even need you at home. You were just excess.

If you didn't have your job and duties to do at home, because you were already there. Do you think you'd join forces with them? Would you kill them and take their place? For some people it could be like freedom too. [A sigh.]

Also, wouldn't it be interesting to have a world change where it didn't go like normal, and all the humans were changed into not-humans instead of not-humans being changed into human beings?
payback: (sun; warning or delight depends on time.)

You know, if all the information found in the book in that other world or whatever is true, it just makes the outsiders look more like scumbags. If I have a giant sentient castle munching on my soul, I'd rather know about it, you know? I don't think I'm really the only one, right? If you have more information, you can make a better decision. Maybe it'd have changed things...

Of course, I guess there hasn't been mass exodus, huh? Is it just that it would be too hard? There's some stuff set up out in the dead zone, but not enough to support everybody in the castle. People would actually have to work for their keep. Maybe it's easier to just pay tribute.

It sounds really ominous, doensn't it? That you're feeding something off your soul. If it's true. But I have to wonder then, what if souls regenerate or something? Maybe souls can heal like bodies do. I guess I don't know enough, but there might be some here who could talk about that. [A small amused sound.]

Though, the world outside is the most exciting thing here, too. We really are living in a world that hasn't been explored... and it's full of beautiful, magical mysteries out there. But even though there are ways we could get out, most people just stay in the castle all the time. Some adventurers.

Who wants to play a game?

[Anyway. Today Rin can be found out on the edge of the woods, in her usual haunt - under Alexstrasza's tree. She's leaned up back against the trunk with her journal over her knees, and her Arcanine sprawled out at her feet, enjoying the dappled sunshine.

I'm back in the castle now. I got back yesterday. [She just took a day to lie around.] For at least two weeks, longer if I can help it. How is everyone? [Whimsically:] Hello, everyone who's new. My name's Rin. I hope you're having an all right time of things so far. Welcome to Paradisa.

[At the moment, the girl herself can be found stretched out on her back on the grass next to the duck pond with her arms folded under her head. Maybe she's cloudwatching, maybe she's napping, or maybe it's both?

There's a weird cactus-looking creature near her, kind of hidden in the other plants, swaying and making weird clunking noises to itself. Rin appears to be otherwise unaccompanied.]

Okay, so... I'm not the only person that got visited by a door last night, right? I'm not the only person who noticed it? I'm not the only person who went in, right?

Has anyone else even mentioned this? Are all the entries filtered away from me somehow? Did I hallucinate that I went through a freestanding door and put Renzo to bed somewhere else, where it looked like his dad was somehow still probably around, where Renzo wasn't just a preformed castle baby and was actually someone's kid? I wonder if that me STILL has the cat parts.

Does this sound familiar to someone? Anyone? Anyone at all?

I wonder if the people over there freak out when their kids go missing on a yearly basis. Assuming that's not just... a castle trick.

SOMEBODY knows what I'm talking about, anyway... right?

[A small sigh. It's been a while since Rin has last talked over the journals; she's feeling a little contemplative.]

Who else remembers the spring where it rained the whole time? I think we were heading out to explore then... to the place where we found Roy. I remember because there was water all over the ground, it was soaked and no fun trying to find a good place to sleep.

When I say that it sounds like I'm leading up to complain. But actually, I liked it. It makes it somehow nicer to be indoors when it's pouring rain outside... it's nice to listen to the rain, and it smells good outside afterward. Sunshine all the time gets a little samey anyway. Not that I would want good weather to go away again either.

[What is she even talking about? Rin falls silent briefly, until a small voice pipes up from a short distance away:] Mama, can I see it? [And Rin makes a small noise, drawing in her breath.] Ah, Renzo, no... why don't I tell you a story or something?

[And for those who might be around the outpost in the dead zone, Rin is just sitting slightly outside the entrance. Her three Pokémon and Legato are scattered around her at varying distance, but Rin herself is ignoring all of them, bending down slightly to open her arms and lift up... her son. Yeah.

Playing the single mom here. There you go.]

[Business time. Written:]

For those of us who met either of us on our child loss, if you hadn't noticed: Legato and I are back to our normal ages. And also back out in the dead zone. [Fortunately.]

I spoke recently with Zexion, when the world changed to the Pokémon world. He informed me that the first gens have mostly departed, and seemed to indicate that they were fleeing something. Though obviously this hints there might be danger out in the dead zone right now, it's also an opportunity for us to explore without fearing attack from them while this lasts and I think we ought to take advantage of it. I know Aradia was planning an expedition too so this might be ideal timing.

He also informed me that in summer, the rivers on what he referred to as the "Totem Coast" open out and let people travel very quickly. I suggest we consider pushing in that direction and maybe making some vessels. This might be a good opportunity for us.

[She's damn well determined to get in on any expeditions that happen too, Legato-watching or no Legato-watching. He can go back in the cells for the trips, for all she cares. Speaking of Legato... thinking on him...]

Rin is in Galadriel's room, crouched in front of what appears to be a giant pot holding her new Maractus, which came back with her. She stares at it rocks back and forth and makes weird cooing and burbling noises to itself.]

Weeiiiird... [Ah, breathless. And then her attention switches to the journal.]

Hey ev'rybody! I'm back! I don't remember anything that happened last week, mostly. [An exaggeration but.] But it was kinda fun, huh? I like these weird animals! They're a little scary too, though.

[personal profile] payback
Ahhh... [Such a happy sigh, here.]

You know what's an extra-weird thing about this no one has mentioned yet? This is a repeated world change - kind of. Years ago now, we went to a world that had Pokémon too. I guess it's probably the same world! I haven't seen any of the kind of Pokémon here that were there, but maybe it's just a matter of time... and anyway, that world change was my favorite one I'd ever been on! I think if I had to live in any world that the castle changed in to for keeps, I'd pick this one.

[She goes quiet for a second. She remembers Zexion asking her that question... the first world change took place when he was still around. She wonders if he's here somewhere. Maybe he'll talk to her if she is. Or maybe she'll broach the subject.]

This world is a lot of fun and it's really interesting and beautiful. And there's so much to explore! And to be honest, I really like Pokémon. Tad has been one of my best friends ever since I met him on the first world change. I hope everyone has fun. This will probably only last a week, anyway... [Her voice drops a little. She's disappointed, yeah. Rin could spend a month here, or even more.

Then reminded of something:]

Ah, yeah, for those of you who saw me... um, I'm older again. That was a quick loss it seems. [Little does she know, ohoho.]

Zexion )

[Open: for those of you who have hit the ground running, you might run into Rin face to face! She went through Route 4, the desert resort, and hit Nimbasa City already, acquiring a new Maractus along the way. She'll go back over it more later and then push on... maybe to Driftveil, or maybe Mistralton? She just wants to see as much of the world as possible.

Anyway, she's sitting on a bench in a public park, kicking back and keeping an eye on her Pokémon. Tad the Arcanine and Certain the Absol are curled up licking each other, while the new Maractus is wobbling in place, staring back at Rin. Apparently it's (at least temporarily) put down roots.]

Hmm, you need a name... [She looks up at the sky, still relaxing on the park bench.] But it has to be a good name. I guess it can wait, anyhow.

I wonder if we should just sleep here in the park tonight...

[What ho Paradisa. If you are the lobby now, you might find a somewhat unusual sight: three kids - well, two kids and one young teenager, really, the teenager conspicuously naked and sprawled out on one of the lobby couches. The teenager has long blue hair and is filthy. The kids are relatively clean, one of them - the older boy - graced with a crown of pale blond hair, the other a smaller little girl wearing a traditional robe and black pigtails. There's a journal nearby of course, and it picks up a voice which might sound a bit familiar:]

Hey... person! Hey! How come you're naked?

[Then the younger boy:] Because he's got no clothes, stupid.

I'm not stupid! [That seems to rile the little girl up; she gives the boy next to her a push.

It looks like this minor ruckus is enough to wake the third boy anyhow.]
Whuh...?

Since it sounds like there's more trouble going on back in the castle, if anyone wants to get clear for the time being then I invite them to come out to the outpost in the dead zone. The rooms will comfortably sleep around twelve people total - make that eleven, given I'm sure no one wants to bunk with Legato - and that said you'll have a roommate. Anyway, we can fit more if it's necessary, even if it'll be less comfortable.

[filtered to people who are interested in the welfare of the castle and the situation with Legato; filtered away from evil people, Legato's allies, and people who would pass information onto them, filtered away from the first gens and those who would pass information onto them, also filtered away from Uru]

Given that it seems we're still stymied on what to do with Legato, I am going to elaborate on my suggestion from earlier.

If, after I go over this, you have nebulous complaints but no suggestions, please save them until you have actual ideas to contribute. If you feel that it's "not your job" to help but would like to criticize anyway, save it. When you take it on as your job, you can control what happens. If you're not willing to do that, then shut up.

Moving on.

Simply turning Legato loose is a terrible suggestion for a number of reasons. For one, we don't have limitless minders for him - anyone who was keeping an eye on him would have to do it all the time, or break into shifts so he was watched all the time. People have lives and this is obviously impractical, obviously also because he could mobilize the townspeople against them easily, and probably a lot of them would die. I hope we care about the lives of the townspeople enough to think about that, and it should negate it outright. Besides this, Legato still has some allies free - other people who worked with him under Riful. Joshua is obviously one such, and he'd probably team up with Legato if bribed with an ice cream come, if he even needed that. A minder might be able to handle Legato, but could they handle Legato and Joshua? Besides, if he escaped, we'd have a hell of a time digging him out wherever he went to ground. Just look at how Joshua is still free.

The outpost, on the other hand, offers a secluded area and a controlled environment to keep him in. He can be minded all the time, and his minders won't need powers to keep an eye on him either. He can have some range of motion there and more stimulation but he won't be as dangerous or hard to control.

I suggest we devote one of the rooms to being his, and collect teams of people willing to mind him on rotating shifts - say two weeks each. Someone is always with him, always watching him, and if he has visitors, he is not left alone with him. If you want to cry at me about how that's so cruel not to give him privacy go devote your misplaced sympathy to the townspeople.

I suggest we install a padded shackle or something in one of the rooms. He can be leg chained at night, and drugged in case he figures out a way to slip out somehow - though we can also watch him overnight. This will obviously require support and participation from other residents so no one gets burned out or has to spend too much time out there when they'd rather be doing other things, and people will have to help supply people living outside in the outpost with food, books, and other things they might need.

If anyone has suggestions to give, I'm happy to listen to them, but Zelman is probably right at least in that Legato is just getting worse the longer he's left in prison and we should do something. If we don't want to execute him, this is the next-best thing, I think.

[Whew! What a chore.

After that talking and some of those tough filters, Rin can be found... sitting on top of one of the castle's towers admiring the view. Nope, not looking out a window, or standing on the roof, but sitting on top of the tower with her feet dangling over the edge.

From here the landscape bends up dizzyingly and unnaturally around the castle, like it's being viewed through a glass sphere or a kaleidoscope. All around is a tapestry of the forest, fields and down, bending up past where they should disappear into horizon and deliriously detailed. It's like something Salvador Dali would paint, is what Rin would say, if only she knew who Dali was!

The outpost in the dead zone is still intact, just saying, and I will remind everyone in general that the doors do lock. We could just stick Legato out there for a while and make sure he didn't get back into the castle zone. No powers, no forcing townspeople to kill each other and themselves. Of course the risk to him would be vengeance-seekers and he might attempt suicide, but it's a possibility.

[And of course, if Legato attempts suicide, it might be doing them all a favor.]

[Idly dictated into the journal,]

It never ceases to amaze me with what people get to write, and what gets made into books. Some things just seem downright treasonous, but they still get bound, and bought, and read by lots of people.

I'm a little jealous to be frank. At home it could be pretty tough to get hold of books and things. Some of my friends couldn't even read so having books would have been moot.

[Rin is in the library today, which is not very surprising: the library is a good place to try and find her. Tad the Arcanine is hanging around lolling under tables and in front of chairs as she reads. Just now, she seems to be slipping a book into her carryall: the curious might get enough of a glimpse to see that she's making off with The Anarchist's Cookbook.
