Chapter Four- The Complaint of Chaucer to his Glass

Hello. My name is Geoffrey Chaucer. I’m conducting a survey of sorts, and I was hoping you would participate. I would just like to know your name and age. I’d also like to know about your stay at Paradisa.

Pardon me, sir. I wonder if you could conduct your experiments and other loud activities at a more decent time. It has come to my attention that you’re keeping other residents up at night.

[He writes the following slowly, frustrated and bored.]
To you, my friends, I do apply
For an answer to my cry.
Does not the wine taste awry?
I drink and drink, yet no ill effect
Happens that I can detect.
Sober as the day I was born,
I raise my tasteless glass, and mourn.

This castle seems to have done me in,
For it will not allow me a single sin
I know I shall be quite forlorn
If I am forced into celibacy in the morn.

[Geoff is sitting in the library, writing the above poem, and working on other writing. He’s a bit annoying, knocking his foot against the table, ripping up parchment and throwing it to the side, and muttering to himself. He’s also a tad grouchy today. He’s been drinking to control the withdrawal symptoms from not gambling. He has a glass of wine next to him that he keeps testing every few minutes, making faces whenever he does. ]

[Geoff turns to look at her and groans.]

[Julia has been here long enough to know her way around the castle, to know where she can go if she needs a quiet place or some kind of distraction. She doesn't come to the library all the time (far from it), but she happens to be here today. She's in the process of absently browsing for some form of reading material when something starts to distract her.

... In any case, enough of a distraction to fully command her attention. She stops, and sends a glance in the direction of where the sounds of foot against table, ripping parchment, and muttering are coming from.]

[Geoff clanks the glass back down on the table, muttering expletives. He glances back at her. What does she- ohhh. She's pretty. He glances over at her again.]

[He hears the voice and glances over at his journal. He adopts a sweeter tone.]

A pleasure to meet you, my dear. Tell me, are you ever lonely or scared in such a big castle? I would be.

[That actually gets an amused look. He turns his attention back to the journal.]

Did you enjoy that nonsense, my lady?

[Martel happens to be in the library, looking for books in her own Elvish language because she is curious, when she hears the poem. She sneaks around the shelves and sees him.]

That was very nice poetry. Well, not nice that you can't drink anymore. [Yes, she understood what he was trying to say.] Is it a loss?

I was merely expressing my frustration, but I thank you for your kind words.
