My best friend and two of my classmates are here. Though one of my classmates is exactly the type of person you described --he'd never admit that he cares about us or anything.

A lot of people are more comfortable keeping everyone at arm's length. It's a bad habit.

[... hm, she pauses at that. because it's true. it's a bad habit, but ... it's definitely one she's indulged in, or tried to]

Sometimes it's easier that way. [a little frown] Where I come from, people get sent on dangerous missions all the time. No matter how powerful or skilled they are, sometimes things happen that you can't predict. [like ... dying :(]

It isn't all that different here. You just have even less control over what happens.
