[Vanyel is... well, floored to say the least by all this. His world had fairs, but there was nothing like this. The closest they came to a 'ride' was pony or hay rides for the children, and maybe a may pole or two, but nothing like this. Glittering ferris wheels, high-speed tilt-a-whirls, screaming roller coasters, foods that had no right existing, games that made no sense and he was sure were rigged,

It was basically one big giant jumble in his head and he is currently sitting on a bench, peering up at the questionable security of the ferris wheel and cringing at the screams from the near roller coasters and swings. Why? Why would you go on that thing in purpose? Thankfully, Yfandes was staying away, more than happy to let him deal with it up close as she watched from afar.

Of course, if there was one thing he had to say, the invention of this pop corn was quite delicious and wonderfully salty. He was currently licking his fingers clean of the salt and butter, glaring at the ferris wheel.

No, no he was not getting on that or anything else. No.]

Is this how all fairs are in the more advanced worlds? Why would you get on anything called a 'Screamer' of any sort?

Even so, I would prefer to avoid it. Plummeting from that height cannot be safe.

Nor are any number of things. There are so many ways a person can die. Chance plays a large part in our mortality. The tragedy of accident. The circumstance that leads a person to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The combination of two genes to make an incurable disease. How much do we really have control over? We take our chances every single day. When you consider that, how much can a ride in a silly little wheel hurt?

I would prefer not to die in it then, little chance or no. I have done enough of skirting death my own world, I prefer to stay away from it here unless necessary.

You're not going to have any fun that way.

I think then, this fair and I define fun in very different terms.

There are other ways. Maybe the petting zoo is more your speed?

Oh, all right. I am not used to the device they use, but I won this off an archery one.

Are you an experienced archer?

Somewhat. I am better at the sword, but I had to learn archery as part of my training.

Both a rare skill where I come from. I can help you with the gun, though, if you like.

Gun? Another of your futuristic weapons?

Well, it would be to you. To me it's commonplace. Think of it as an advanced form of your bow and arrows.

Oh, all right. I suppose it might not be a bad idea to learn then.

[He stands from the bench, places on hand in his pants pocket, and uses the other to gestures towards the midway]

_{[Vanyel nods and rises, boots crunching across the ground as he heads for the main game tent area, already knowing which tent they would be going to. He knew what a gun was, knew what it looked like thanks to the library, but had never actually touched one.]}

[The booth itself was riot of flashing lights and soft clacking as the various targets moved back and forth on tracks on the far wall.

Muraki nodded and stepped up to the counter, where small toy rifles were tied in intervals. He handed the attendant a few tokens, enough for the both of them, and held out one of the guns to Vanyel]

Here you are. The objective is to hit the targets. The smaller ones up on the top row are worth more than the large ones there on the bottom.

_{[He looks at the gun dubiously, running his hands over the false stock and around the trigger.]}

I suppose this is how I get it to shoot?

That's right. You aim it like this... [He stepped close until he was almost touching the herald, and guided the barrel of Vanyel's gun upwards with his hand, placing the stock near his shoulder]

Look down the barrel and use the sight at the end there to pick your target. Simple.

_{[Vanyel blinked at the sudden closeness, but did not move away, only.. seemed to tense the slightest bit. He let the other guide the gun into place and sighted down it.]}

All right, I suppose it's something like shooting an arrow...

I couldn't say. The only thing you have to worry about it kickback, though there won't be much of that with these little things. I believe they're powered with air rather than gunpowder.

[He moves away and takes up his own gun]

Ready?

I suppose so. Won't know until I try.
