[Tim stares at his journal for a good few minutes, trying to decide what to say or write. After spending nearly a month lost in a sea of research or working, his brain is having a hard time getting back into "social Alvin Draper" mode.
He browses some of his old journal entries to recharge his memory. After a few more minutes pass, an idea pops into his head. Maybe Cass' curiosity will lure her in to respond or she'll track him down to give him a look.]
So, hey. I've got a strange request--or at least it might sound strange! I promise it's not as strange as it sounds. In fact, it's a lot of fun.
When I first came here, I was running a pencil and paper game for my friends, using a D20 system. The game we were playing was Warlocks and Warriors. You pick a base class, draw up a character sheet, and then a storyteller guides you through stories. You roll the twenty sided die to help determine the outcome of different challenges. At one point, I had a group of three which is a good number for beginners. Unfortunately, two of the players went home. Well, that's not really unfortunate for them! But you know what I mean.
If anyone is interested in playing, I could teach you, or I'm sure my girlfriend, Stephanie Brown, would be happy to help. She also plays with me.

Lots of things did.
She's curious now, so she climbs down to the window to Stephanie and Tim's room, peeking in to see if he's there. Once she sees him, she taps on the glass. Hi Tim, let her in, she's making first contact and everything. PROGRESS!]

Picks himself up from the bed and moves over to the window, opening it up for her to get in.]

Awesome. If you'd like, I can drop off the player handbook later on in the evening.

How do you win?
[ priorities. ]
no subject
You can also win by achieving your own personal goals. Say for example, you roll a paladin and your goal is to become a Knight of Bahamut. If you end up becoming a knight, you can count that as a victory.

You create characters to play a game? Why?
no subject
To make things more interesting and fantastical. In the world I come from, the majority of people are every day people, with no special abilities. Roleplaying doing your homework or sitting around watching television, wouldn't be much fun.

...That game sounds pretty complicated. How do the dice tell you what happens? You don't have like...words on them do you?

Rewrites the explanation he gave Arya.]
There are quite a few, but there's also an alternative rule set for beginners. In a nutshell, you get a set of stat points and skill points to start out with. You start off with six stats; strength, dexterity, constitution, wisdom, intelligence, and Charisma. Every point you put in one of those scores, makes your character better than the average person.
Let's say you go with a fighter. You'll want to be stronger and tougher than most people. Your role is usually to take a hit and deal out the damage. So, your main scores to focus on would be constitution and strength. Whenever you go to attack something, they have a armor class score you have to reach in order to hit them.
Let's say their armor class is 14. At level five, your fighter would get a bonus of 5 to hit them. Then, if you added two points to her strength, she'd get a plus 1. For every two points you put into a stat score, you get a plus one to your roles. Your total would be 6. Then you roll a twenty sided dice. You need to roll a 8 or higher to hit the bad guy. You can buy enchantments for your weapon to make it easier to hit people and do more damage.
