[Well, residents. It is time for that question that seems to pop up at least once a month or at least several times a year when a holiday comes around. You all know that question. The question from the poor souls who have no idea what it is all the fuss is about, and not sure they want to know. But being as they don't want to be caught unawares, they ask anyways.]

I have been hearing chatter about this and have read some of it in some quite old entries in the journal, but... What, precisely, is Valentine's Day?

It's a holiday where you try get the gals you like presents, like flowers and chocolates. It's sort of a holiday of love. [Yes, they have those on Earth.]

Hopefully. It seems a strange sort of holiday, but everyone seems... nervous for it?

Probably because they think or know the Castle's going to do something, like the sugarplum fairies at Christmas.

Well it's supposed to be a holiday centered around celebrating love and couples. But a lot of people see it as a commercialized excuse to buy a bunch of heart shaped candies and flowers and cards. And for single people to curl up on the couch and cry through a sappy romance movie. [No lie. He's seen Angie do it a couple times.]

Uh, we don't usually. Midnighter isn't exactly the romancing type. Once in a while we'll catch a movie or something, but that's about it.

It's a holiday based on romance. I'll leave it up to you to decide how genuine it is once the castle starts celebrating it.

I thought that was what Christmas was for with all the faeries and kissing.

[He chuckles] Oh, apparently that's simply a small tradition that's been blown rather out of proportion by the castle. It's not actually the entire reason for the holiday.

And don't expect the faeries next year. It changes.

It does? So one cannot see the object and avoid them before hand then.

You can try, I suppose. You might even succeed. It just happens that the castle finds ways to hide them even when you're trying to cautious.

Valentines day is the greeting card and candy company's excuse for a holiday. You're supposed to use the day to show someone you care by buying them some pre-packaged pink and red crap and showering them with ridiculously cheesy romantic bullshit. Why you can't do this any other day of the year is the fucking mystery.

I.... see. So, what do you do if you do not have someone to show such love towards? I assume it is not shown in such a way to close relatives and friends?

Some people do. More friends than relatives, of course. Some people use it as a sappy reason to ask someone out on a first date or throw a party.

Overly harmful, no... just wait til the castle gets a hold of it, though. Last year there were candy hearts everywhere and we had to do whatever it said on 'em if we ate 'em.
