[It's a beautiful morning, shaping up to be a hot and humid day, as so many summer days at the Blind Buffalo Resort are. The piles and piles of people arriving in their cars to check in at the modest front office make it a noisy morning too, full of chatter and greetings from those who have long been apart. There isn't enough room in the office for everyone, so there's spillover of the crowd to outside, and a noise crowd jammed inside the room.

For a genius, one would think he would reconsider that.

[They were not and you know full well Helen has been supportive of his rehabilitation. Though she hasn't had contact with John for years. He used to have a habit of popping in and out of her life.]

Reconsider being a part of this family? Why James, that's cruel even for you're protective nature.

He's with me because he loves me. [Maladict stands, angry] Why can't you just accept that?

[unnaturalpause]

[And if he hadn't proven to be a danger then James wouldn't have such an issue with John.

And that's part of the issue he has right now with Nikola, and he actually straightens up to give Maladict a look.]

Because as you said, he's an unappreciated genius. We have quite some standing as a family and it's not as if we're exactly poor throughout it.

[Yup he thinks he's using you Mal :/]

[He was not himself! She's sure of it, but then again Helen has proven to have a weakness where John was concerned. At least she had changed the security on the house after the last time he'd come by. That would keep him out.]

I think he is brilliant, he's just so brilliant he has a hard time finding mundane applications for it. You could always have him work for you, James. You'd be able to keep an eye on him and make sure he made something of himself.

[Why did it always seem she was pushing people to work together?]

[That, unfortunately, was a step too far. Maladict's hand closed into a fist, which she would have very much loved to have swung at her father. Instead, she slammed it down on the nearest table with a loud WHACK]

Don't bother, Mother. He's already decided that Nikola doesn't love me. Why should he bother proving himself. [She gives her father a cold, hard look before stalking out the door]

After all, who would be crazy enough to actually love me for me. It's got to be the money.

[unnaturalpause]

[Of course she has and James hadn't been exactly thrilled with having to do that. Hence the issue with him still, and well James still thinks John's at fault.

Which probably explains why he's not to thrilled with Nikola either.

And he snaps his head up at Mal, the slamming really not needed, his voice much more firm then before.] If I didn't want him to prove himself, he wouldn't be here. We wouldn't be here.

[Because he does care and honestly wants Nikola to care for Mal, but he's still rather leery on the man.

Plus really he doesn't want to be here either.]

And if he, proves himself this week. [Ugh ugh compromise no he does not want but it's Mal and if he wants a quiet week it's needed.] And doesn't cavort with Tony and the others with money [Grumble grumble] I'll give him work.

[Compromise? James you have never been sexier. Have an adoring wife in your arms in that instant.]

There's the kind, generous man I fell in love with.

Mal, your father and I may need the cabin for an hour....possibly two.

He should have to prove himself!

You know, what? Fine, have the cabin for as long as you like, I'll find somewhere else to sleep.

[Door slam out is a go!]

[unnaturalpause]

[He had tried. Honestly this is going to annoy him more then he'd like really and with a grunt, and an apologetic look to Helen he tries to move to go after her, opening the door.]

You're a teenager! Why the devil shouldn't he have to?

[teratologist]

James.

[Helen sighed and caught his arm for a moment.]

She may be young but she is not a child, they are married and he makes her happy. What exactly do you think you will accomplish by alienating our daughter?

James you are a wonderful man and a superb father, but you can't always be the one man in her life.

[He sighed at that, not fighting her grip on his arm.]

I'm not trying to be. I'm trying to make sure she's safe with a man we only know after their marriage.

[He had done a good job of either ignoring him before or just not being told anything...]

[Helen understood him, he only wanted the best for his family. She loved him for his devotion, among his other and numerous wonderful qualities.]

Perhaps letting her feel comfortable with you rather than wanting to run away from you might help to that end. It was very rushed and I know we barely know Nikola, but I want our family to be able to rely on each other. Difficult as that may be with a teenager in love.

[unnaturalpause]

[But he was a stubborn ass on occasion. That much he knew and so he shrugged as he turned to her with a sigh.]

Fine. [Only for you Helen.] I'll, try too do so. [Grumble.]

[teratologist]

[A stubborn ass she loved dearly. She moved in to wrap her arms around him.}

That's the genius man I fell in love with. Have I told you lately how attractive I find compromise?
