This mark and attached notice are here to alert you to great news. The news, of course, is that your journals are now the property of Mistress. She will let you look after them for the time being, as a sign of her good will. She's a very generous dictatress, you know.

Well, you see, my dear Mistress gave me a mission to spread her Mark upon everything. She's going to take it over, someday - the castle, I mean - so she might as well get a headstart.

So that is what the mark is for! It marks anything that belongs to the Mistress.

Uh ... that's not how ownership works. What you're doing is actually called vandalism and it's bad. Now, if you wanted to pay me for the journal and then I'd say it's hers, yeah. We could work something out.

[Chell notices the mark in her journal, and her eyebrows go up. Like hell her journal belongs to someone called the Mistress. Who the heck is this Mistress anyhow? Reaching across the table that serves as her desk, she picks up a black marker, and draws a line carefully right through the center of the mark. And under the accompanying message she writes the following.]

My journal is mine and mine alone.

[And Sandoval is quick to draw another one.]

Oh, don't be that way, my dear handwriting. She's still letting you use them! And you can still carry them around and everything!

[Chell's a stubborn one. VERY stubborn. Picking up her marker again, she completely obliterates the mark under a black smudge before writing back.]

She does not control me. Nor does she control my journal. My journal is mine, and it belongs to me, and this Mistress of yours may feel free to go rot somewhere. I am no part of anything she is involved in. I am an autonymous creature and nobody has any right to try to take from me what is mine, and it matters little whether she is "charitable" enough to let me carry it.

[Yup. Someone's been controlled against her will before, and refuses to stand for it.]

[Unfortunately, Sandoval can be as well. As she writes, Sandoval is drawing on the O's and the U's, turning them into little marks of the Mistress.]

Oh, she's not my Mistress, you see. And of course, you may do as you please - she's not asking for control of you, at least not yet; it's simply the journals themselves, pumpkin.
