What strain of revenge could possibly have driven you to a career instead of garden-variety murder?

[assassino]

My father was framed for a crime he did not commit, and both my brothers were executed simply to make a point.. My mother was violated, my sister frightened, and our family seat overturned. It all happened as a small part of a greater conspiracy. Killing one of the conspirators wouldn't have stopped them, nor kept what is left of my family safe from further harm.

Ten years later, there's only one left to assassinate.

[molotov]

And what has your family done to deserve being made a point of?

[assassino]

My father was unravelling the conspiracy himself.

[But he doesn't know much more than that, and he hates it.]

[molotov]

Unfortunate. At least you have been able to avenge your family.

[assassino]

Yes. It's a small consolation, even if it will not bring them back.

[molotov]

And it is more than most people get.

[assassino]

That is true, as well.

Trust me. Be as grateful as possible for even that small consolation.

Anyway, it is interesting that only your immediate family has been taken out. I was under the impression that families were far more connected in your time.

[assassino]

Noble families have broad lineages, yes, our family is small, and does not have centuries of history like houses like Sforza, or Medici, and so on. My father's only brother, my Uncle Mario, did not marry, and my grandfather was the only child of Domenico Auditore, who founded our line.

As such, it is just myself, my mother, my sister and my uncle. I am sure our enemies would not hesitate to murder my uncle as well.

And unless you plan on having many children, your line will probably die with you. Sad. I empathize.

I intend to have a wife and children of my own someday. As long as I have a boy, the line will continue...

[pause]

Unless, in the future, you count women as heirs, too.

But I am sorry about your family line.

[Molotov uses this chance to give Ezio a big size-eye. Buddy, you are a little too old to be talking about "someday" -- your world doesn't all kinds of nifty fertilization options. And then it strikes her that he's probably going to wind up with a child bride. Because lol 1400s.

Well, women can be heirs, but most women take their husband's name anyway, simply for the ease of having a single family name. As for me, I could pass my name down, but chances are that I will never marry. And even if I do, I am not really young enough to be having children.

Besides, I feel like my papa would rest easier if I did not carry on our name.

[assassino]

[He's not sure why he's getting that look, so he just frowns.

And is confused.]

Even if you are too old to have children, are you not marrying Samson?

[molotov]

Of course I am. Here.

[assassino]

Why not at home, as well?

[molotov]

Many reasons, the most important of which being that he will not leave his life to join mine.

[assassino]

[Scoff.]

The moment the last conspirator is dead, I am setting down my blade in favour of a wife. It's too hard of a life to be an assassin, especially when one could be a husband instead. Your betrothed is an idiot... no offense intended.

[molotov]

None taken, I am very aware of his idiocy. His main defense seems to be that he objects to me fighting for myself and the dollar, rather than some broad concept of "good". Meaning he sees me as "bad".

[assassino]

[Deadpan look.]

And what does he think is "bad" about you?

[molotov]

[Molotov sighs very heavily.]

Samson has a... very black and white view of the world. There is "good", of course -- fighting for innocents, taking down those who would threaten them, selflessness, etcetera. Then there is "bad" -- being self-interested, not adhering to an agenda of world betterment, blah blah.

I do not have loyalties anymore; that time is done for me. My loyalty is to myself, at this point. I work for whoever can afford me, instead of for the government. I use every tool at my disposal, and let my ends justify my means. These things make me "bad", to him.

Samson, on the other hand, has wasted his life playing nursemaid to a family of infantile men who do not deserve his talents. The government threw him away. Now, ironically, he goes outside of the law to punish those that his psychotic, drug-addled mentor says deserve punishment. But this, to him, is fine, because it is for "good".

Besides all of these inanities, it does not help that we have always been on opposing sides. We were born in and worked for two different countries that were at war, under completely different ideologies that oppose each other at their very cores. By the time my country lost and I went freelance, he had already devoted himself to playing nanny, and he would not be swayed.

He also probably does not appreciate the punishment he has been suffering for twenty-odd years.

[Unimpressed sound.]
